Pinellas County Beaches Today

Water temperature, rip current risk, red tide samples, water quality and tides for eight beaches. Every number says where it came from and when it was measured, and where there is no measurement we say that instead of guessing.

All eight beaches right now

This table refreshes every hour. Until it does, it lists which source speaks for each beach.

What the beach flags mean

Beach warning flags are physical flags, raised and lowered by lifeguards on the beach. Nably does not and cannot know which flag is flying right now, so no page states today's flag colour. The guide below explains what each colour means so a visitor can read the flags when they arrive. Florida Department of Health Read 5 October 2026

Green
Low hazard. Calm conditions, though calm is not the same as risk free.
Yellow
Medium hazard. Moderate surf or currents.
Red
High hazard. High surf or strong currents.
Double red
Water closed to the public.
Purple
Dangerous marine life. Flown alongside another colour, not instead of it, because it says nothing about the surf.

Which beach for what

Only the comparisons we can point at an official source for.

Bringing a dog
Three of the eight have somewhere a dog is actually allowed. Pinellas County describes Fort De Soto as the only park in the county where dogs are allowed on the beach in a designated area. Honeymoon Island has a pet beach on its southern tip. St. Pete Beach has a bay-side dog area at the end of Pass-a-Grille Way. Everywhere else on this list prohibits dogs on the sand. source 1 source 2 source 3
Finding a parking space
Pass-a-Grille has the largest public beach parking in St. Pete Beach, with 541 spaces on Gulf Way and 186 more on Pass-a-Grille Way. Clearwater Beach has more lots in total but each is small, and the city lists a two hour limit on its largest. source 1 source 2
Swimming near a lifeguard
Clearwater Beach is the only beach of the eight whose authority publishes lifeguard hours, seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The others do not state coverage either way, so we do not imply it. source
Bringing a drink
Madeira Beach allows alcohol on the beach but not in glass containers, with exceptions at the beach access easements and two parks. Clearwater Beach and Indian Rocks Beach both prohibit it outright, and Treasure Island restricts it seasonally on part of Sunset Beach. source

Deliberately not here: calmest water for small children, and the best beach for shelling. Both are asked about constantly and neither has an official source we could cite, so we have left them out rather than publish an opinion dressed as a fact.

Common questions

What does a purple flag at the beach mean?
Purple warns of dangerous marine life, such as jellyfish. It is flown alongside a hazard colour rather than instead of one, so a purple flag on its own tells you nothing about the surf. Read both. source
What do the beach flag colours mean in Florida?
Green is low hazard, yellow medium, red high, and double red means the water is closed. Purple is a separate warning about marine life. The flags are raised and lowered by lifeguards on the beach, so they are the most current information available anywhere, and more current than this page. source
Which Pinellas beach has the warmest water?
The difference between these beaches on any given day is smaller than the difference between a shallow sandbar and chest-deep water at the same beach. Only two water temperature sensors cover this coast, one at Clearwater Beach and a buoy offshore in the Gulf, and the monthly tables on each beach page show what each one has recorded over five years. source 1 source 2
Is there red tide in Pinellas County right now?
The red tide page lists the most recent FWC sample near each of these eight beaches, with the date and the distance. FWC sampling can lag by about two weeks, so no recent sample near a beach is not evidence that the water is clear. It means nobody has taken a sample there lately. source
Can I check the water quality at a Pinellas beach?
The Florida Department of Health samples 14 sites in Pinellas County for bacteria. Four of the eight beaches here have a monitoring site at the beach itself. The other four do not, and those pages link to the county page rather than borrow a result from a different beach. source
