Tampa Bay is one of the most underrated guys trip destinations in the Southeast. It has the combination most destinations can't pull off: genuinely great public golf, offshore fishing that rivals the Keys, a beach scene that doesn't feel like a spring break cliché, and a nightlife district in Ybor City that runs late and has real character. Here's how to build a weekend that covers all of it.
The Tampa Bay area has more quality public and semi-private golf than most visitors realize, and the weather means you can tee off year-round. Here are the courses worth building your trip around.
Innisbrook Resort — Copperhead Course (Palm Harbor). This is the marquee round. Innisbrook's Copperhead Course is a PGA Tour venue — it hosts the Valspar Championship every spring — and it's open to resort guests and the public. The course is a par-71 layout through pine and oak trees with elevation changes that are unusual for Florida. It plays long and demands accuracy off the tee. Green fees run $150–$250 depending on season, which is fair for a genuine Tour-level experience. Book well in advance, especially on weekends. Innisbrook has three other courses on the property if you want to play multiple days without repeating.
Bardmoor Golf & Tennis Club (Seminole). Bardmoor is a par-72 course owned and operated by PGA pros, which shows in the conditioning. The greens are TifEagle grass — the same variety used on Tour — and the course has real elevation changes for Florida. The 16th hole, a creek-side par-5 measuring 521 yards from the back tees, is one of the better finishing stretches in the area. Green fees are reasonable compared to Innisbrook, and the course is consistently in excellent shape.
Mangrove Bay Golf Course (St. Pete). Mangrove Bay is a city-owned par-72 municipal course on 180 acres in northeast St. Pete, and it's the most-played course in the area for a reason. The layout is straightforward and well-maintained, green fees are among the lowest you'll find for a full 18-hole course in the region, and the practice facility is excellent. It's the right call if you want a casual morning round before a beach afternoon or if someone in the group is a higher handicapper who'd rather not pay resort prices.
Dunedin Golf Club (Dunedin). The Dunedin Golf Club is a Donald Ross-designed par-72 course and one of the best-kept secrets in the area. Donald Ross courses have a distinctive character — subtle undulations, well-placed bunkers, and greens that reward proper approach angles — and Dunedin has all of it at a price that's significantly lower than comparable courses. The club has a traditional feel and a welcoming atmosphere. It's worth the short drive from St. Pete.
Wentworth Golf Club (Tarpon Springs). Wentworth is a semi-private par-71 course with tight, tree-lined fairways and elevated greens that create interesting putting situations. The English Manor Clubhouse is a good spot for a post-round drink. The course plays differently than the open, water-heavy layouts you find elsewhere in Florida — the tree cover makes it feel more like a Carolina course than a Gulf Coast one.
Clearwater Beach is one of the best departure points for offshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, and the options range from party boat trips to private charters. Party boats run 5-hour half-day trips and 10-12 hour full-day trips out of the Clearwater Beach marina — they're affordable, social, and consistently productive for grouper, snapper, and amberjack. If the group wants a private experience, several charter operators run 4-6 person trips out of both Clearwater and St. Pete. Expect to pay $600–$1,200 for a private half-day charter depending on boat size and season. Inshore fishing in Tampa Bay itself is also excellent — redfish, snook, and tarpon are all present — and inshore charters are typically less expensive than offshore trips.
A beach day is non-negotiable on a Tampa Bay guys trip, and the Gulf water in summer is warm enough to stay in for hours. St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach are the two main options — Clearwater is more developed with more amenities, St. Pete Beach is slightly more laid-back. For a group, renting gear locally is far easier than hauling it. Local hosts on Nably offer inflatable paddleboard rentals delivered to your beach or rental house — paddleboarding the calm Gulf water is one of the better low-key activities for a group that wants to be on the water without committing to a full charter. Lawn games (Giant Jenga, Cornhole, Spikeball) are also available from local Pinellas County hosts on Nably for pickup — they're worth having for the rental house or a beach afternoon.
Ybor City in Tampa is the best nightlife option for a guys trip in the area, and it's genuinely different from the beach bar scene. The 7th Avenue strip is walkable, dense with bars and clubs, and runs late — most venues don't close until 3am on weekends. The area has a mix of Latin-influenced clubs, craft beer bars, and live music venues, and the energy on a Friday or Saturday night is hard to match elsewhere in Florida. The Columbia Restaurant on 7th Avenue is the oldest restaurant in Florida (open since 1905) and worth a dinner reservation before the evening starts — the flamenco show runs nightly and is a genuinely memorable experience for a group. After dinner, the strip is walkable and the cover charges are reasonable.
If the trip overlaps with a Tampa Bay Rays game at Tropicana Field or a Tampa Bay Lightning game at Amalie Arena, both are worth attending — the venues are good and tickets are accessible. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa is a 24-hour option for the group that wants to gamble — it's a full-scale casino with a sportsbook, poker room, and multiple restaurants. It's about 20 minutes from St. Pete and worth an evening if the group is into it.
A vacation rental house in St. Pete Beach or Clearwater Beach is the right call for a guys group — you get a private space, a yard or pool, and the ability to host without coordinating around hotel common areas. The short-term rental market in both areas is strong, with plenty of options that sleep 6-10 people. Book early for summer weekends as inventory moves fast.
